What To Expect

What To Expect

Before The First Visit
Before your child's first appointment, discuss the positive aspects of the visit with them, such as the importance of having healthy teeth and a good smile. You can also explain that the doctor will count and take pictures of his/her teeth. Remember, you play a large role in your child's perception of the dental experience, so it is important to convey a relaxed and comfortable attitude toward visiting the dentist. If your child does become afraid, be reassuring. Young children often cry when faced with unfamiliar situations. Working together, we can overcome any apprehension your child may have. Expect your child to do well and enjoy their visit to our office and chances are they will do just that!

The First Visit
For children under 3 years of age the dentist will typically have you assist with the exam by holding the child during a "Knee to Knee Exam".  The type of exam allows the dentist and parent to easily view the teeth as proper brushing is demonstrated.
Don't be upset if your child does cry during his/her first trip to the dentist as this is a normal reaction to the unknown. In fact, in infants, crying actually helps us see everything we need to see.

For children 3 years and older, the first exam may include a cleaning, x-rays and/or fluoride depending on the child's stage of developement.  Our goal is to obtain a postive experience for the child each time he/she visits.  Parents are always welcome to come back with the child at the first visit.

After the initial visit, we encourage children 3 years of age and older to come back to the treatment area by themselves as this builds independence and trust.
